I was truly stunned by the complex and fascinating biography of this woman and her family. The many advances in medical research owe so much to her cells but it became apparent that we should be afraid for the future of ethics in this field. The murky past present and future of patient rights and in fact human rights should be of concern to all. ~ Reviewed by Karen Frank

Knockout: Interviews with Doctors Who Are Curing Cancer--And How to Prevent Getting It in the First Place Cover Image
By Suzanne Somers, Julian Whitaker (Foreword by)

Published: Harmony - October 5th, 2010

Cancer rates are steadily on the rise- both in the US and in the world (as western culture and its accompanying poor dietary habits- and industrial pollution- continue to spread). And, sadly, the prevailing medical strategy of treating cancer patients by attacking the symptoms of their disease with toxic chemicals and radiation demonstrates low long term survivorship rates in many patients and for many varieties of cancer.

There are doctors out there battling cancer from a different perspective, doctors focusing on the internal physical imbalances that are at the cause of most tumor development and spread. Although Somers is by no means the first to draw attention to alternative views on cancer healing, her media clout and major publisher backing makes this a significant step forward in the fight to spread the news to all- current and future cancer patients and families- that there are frequently better ways to heal- and prevent- cancer than those currently presumed and accepted by the AMA and its pharmaceutical sponsors.

Ms. Somers "in-your-face, traditional medicine" variety of zeal may turn some folks off- especially those inclined to disagree with her view points or to discredit her due to her resume (blonde actress, home shopping sales magnate) but, based on her personal experience and acquired knowledge, she is a woman on a crusade.

In this reader's opinion, she has every reason to be. ~ Reviewed by Jon Fine

"Is this the promised end?"
"Or image of that horror?

These lines from King Lear capture something of the sense of apocalypse that engulfed the gay community in America as the AIDS epidemic ravaged its ranks in the 1980s, even as it seemed that America, from the President to the man in the street, simply did not give a damn. Twenty years after its initial publication, Randy Shilts' account of the first decade of the epidemic remains the best we have-- no other writer has brought to bear on the subject such a combination of scrupulous scholarship and pure outrage, which render vivid both that era of desperation and the shame that will forever stain it in the pages of history.

In his unique fashion, Oliver Sacks once again allows us insight into the workings of the human brain. Musicophilia describes and analyzes the effects of music using anecdotes about patients, family, friends and himself. The various powers of music are described and detailed from therapeutic uses of music for various brain malfunctions, to the reason we often run annoying tape loops of music in our minds. I learned amazing concepts and was completely fascinated. ~ Reviewed by Karen Frank
