As someone who is rarely a sci-fi or fantasy book reader, this was the perfect novel to pique my interest in the mystical genre. Gaiman's cheeky British wit allows a highly imaginative story in the invisible London underground to become more accessible for the hesitant reader such as myself. After reading Neverwhere, I'd say I'm sold on all Gaiman novels from now on. ~ Reviewed by Laura Knapp

Every Heart A Doorway is a magical tale, full of lyrical writing and amazing representation packed into just 173 pages. It is dark and gritty; a story about all the children who have ever felt different. The main characters have escaped their harsh realities by walking through a doorway, falling down a rabbit hole, or vanishing into a wardrobe. Now they’re back in the real world, in a home for wayward children, trying to cope with the loss of their own little worlds. Each installment of this series is under 300 pages so this very well could be the next series you binge read. ~ Reviewed by Cassidy Washburn

If you are familiar with the band called “clipping,” then you may recognize some of the authors’ names, as well as the title of this book. The Deep is a novella based on a song of the same name and performed by Diggs, Hutson, and Snipes. It is a story about sea-dwelling creatures who are descendents of the pregnant African woman thrown overboard by slavers during the slave trade. It isn’t just a story about “mermaids;” it is a story about memory, history, and survival. This short novel will resonate with you long after you’ve finished it. ~ Reviewed by Cassidy Washburn

Look, JUST because it's the sequel to my favorite book of 2019... and JUST because it's from the point of view of the character I cosplayed from the first book... and JUST because it beautifully uses second-person narration to disorient the reader... does NOT mean that I'm playing favorites when I say that this is probably going to be my favorite book of 2020! Like the first book, it's a mystery, but the NATURE of that mystery is so complex and metatextual that it requires having read the first book to even know that something is wrong, let alone starting to figure out what's going on. The first four acts slowly line up question after question after question, then when Act 5 hits it is the most SATISFYING thing! ART. ~ Reviewed by Andrew Bugenis

I can't tell you what makes this book so awesome without major spoilers, so just take a trust fall into this ball pit of a book (wait, are those balls made of bones? Are there monsters, dad jokes, and awful epic poetry hiding underneath? Is there enough sass? Who else is in this ball pit? JUST JUMP OR I'LL PUSH YOU). ~ Reviewed by Katelynne Shimkus

After her mother dies, Yeine Darr is summoned to the city of Sky, where the Gods are enslaved, and she is named an Heiress to the King. She is ultimately thrust into a power struggle with the other two Heirs and soon realizes that the throne of the Hundred Thousand Kingdoms is not easily won. Jemisin’s The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms is the first book in her Inheritance trilogy. It features exquisite world-building, well-rounded characters, and a romance that will leave you asking for more (not because it was lacking, but because it was THAT good). The diversity that Jemisin writes into the story, from race to sexuality, is also something to keep an eye on. The following two books are set in the same world, following different characters, but each book is just as good as the previous one. ~ Reviewed by Cassidy Washburn
