This modern day fairy tale is a stunning debut novella by a wonderful Australian writer, one I am so glad to have discovered. In enchanting prose we follow the tale of a young woman in western Australia. A series of events causes her to begin to question her memories of the unexpected disappearance of her brothers and the earlier departure of her father from the family. She slowly begins to unravel the truth of her past, as well as who her mother is and her father was. This enchanting read brings to life our own often tumultuous memories and understandings of our past. ~ Reviewed by Tambra Johnson Reap

Set in an alternative 18th-century middle east, The City of Brass follows a young woman named Nahri, a con-artist with miraculous healing abilities. Despite her abilities, Nahri does not believe in magic; that is until she accidentally summons a djinn warrior named Dara. What follows is an adventure filled with danger, magic, and political intrigue. A new favorite, for sure! ~ Reviewed by Cassidy Washburn

Piranesi, though that’s not his name, lives in a house with no end, by himself, save for a few fish and birds, and a once-weekly visit from someone he calls “the Other”. The house, with vast white marble rooms, full of statues and columns, goes on for infinity through halls, corridors, and courtyards, and exists on three levels, the lower floors are home to an ocean with its unique tidal flow, the upper floors are in the clouds, and in the middle is Piranesi’s world. Piranesi is blissfully happy, and perfectly in balance with his world, a master of its internal seasons and its idiosyncrasies, until the day “the Oracle” unexpectedly arrives and then all he thinks he knows begins to unravel. A work of genius! ~ Reviewed by Becky Doherty

The premise is in the title. This is a novel about a school where literally everything wants to kill you, and not only will you need to work hard to graduate, but also just stay alive. This is the first in a new series for Novik, and the world we’re stepping into is that of the Scholomance, a magical school for gifted teenagers. Our protagonist is El, a homeschooled rebel, who wants desperately to be good enough to get into one of the large city enclaves with the savvy city kids upon graduation and be able to enjoy the safety that being a member of that kind of society affords. But, of course, things don’t go exactly to plan, and not everything is as it seems.
A really fun, page turner, and I can’t wait to find out what comes next. ~ Reviewed by Becky Doherty

The first in a new series and also the first adult fantasy novel from Maas, and it’s as good as we knew it would be. Fans of her Court of Thorns and Roses YA series will find much here to enjoy, we are again in a world inhabited by the Fae, and other mythical races who are in constant battles over power and conquest. Maas is so good at world-building, and the fast-paced roller coaster rides that her novels are but also, the characters are so deeply written that you are fully drawn into the story from page one. This is a big meaty novel you can get comfortable with, and if you like your high fantasy a little racy, and full of conflict, then this is a new series you are going to love! ~ Reviewed by Becky Doherty

Originally written in 1983, this book was twenty or thirty years ahead of its time, with a great female protagonist who drives the story and a healthy dose of Chinese mysticism. That makes it maybe ten years behind where we are now, where some elements are handled in a way that you don't quite wince at, but you certainly notice. Still, it's aged better than many of its contemporaries, and is a quicker read that you can often find today. I particularly enjoyed the elegant and eloquent manner of speech between the two main characters, helping to elevate it to a loftier level of enjoyment. ~ Reviewed by Andrew Bugenis
