From the author of City of Stairs comes another fun, imaginative fantasy with its own fascinating magic-tech system that powers the industrial city of Tevanne. Amongst the squalor of the city’s poor lives Sancia, a young thief about to make her biggest score…or so she believes. Magic, Industrial espionage and ancient history combine to make this a great start for Bennett’s new series. ~ Reviewed by Ben Parker

Where A Song of Ice and Fire deals with people at the top of society, Two of Swords chronicles a great war between two halves of an ancient empire from the point of view of, mostly, the people at the bottom. Each chapter of the first two volumes changes to a different protagonist with their own story, and though the third volume follows just one character, it ends up weaving these individual threads into a strong, compelling narrative tapestry. ~ Reviewed by Andrew Bugenis

A dark, compelling Russian fantasy with obvious comparisons to Harry Potter or The Magicians except it takes its own gritty approach to this territory. Sasha and her classmates are chosen, willing or not, to attend the Institute of Special Technologies and failure has it own dire consequences for their friends and family. I found myself drawn in by the original magic system; leave your wands and your reality at home. ~ Reviewed by Ben Parker

A most beautifully written book about the eternal struggle for equality, and respect for others. It is a story we will always be telling, and sadly, always struggling with in our daily lives. However, this novel is so much more, it brings in folklore, mysticism, and epic storytelling. Focusing on two sisters, who though very different from each other, share the bond of true love, we enter the woods and the fights that dwell there between the various different cultures living in it, and how their love brings everyone together. Drawing inspiration from Ukrainian history and mythology, and Rossetti’s Goblin Market, Rossner has written a gem. ~ Reviewed by Becky Doherty

What happens when coming of age comes with more changes than expected? A family lives in the woods, apart from their village. The parents of Liba and Laya are called away, and one sister learns a family secret right before they leave. The story combines Jewish myth with historical fiction, including the advance of the Russian Pogroms on their village. I liked how the chapters alternated between one sister writing in prose and the other writing in poetry, which helps define their characters. This story will sweep you along and keep you intrigued. ~ Reviewed by Percy Sutton

Tolkien once wrote that stories, even fairy-tales, shouldn't be dumbed down for children, because they too face the difficult world we live in. McGuire's story is wonderous and ominous, following an capable but ordinary heroine as she navigates the world of the Market, our own world, and growing up from 6 to 17. Dark, feminist, bibliophilic, bildungsroman, ambiguously unresolved - this book checks all my favorite boxes.
(Also, I was unaware that this book was part of a series until I wrote this review, so don't be worried by the "#4" - it's perfectly standalone.) ~ Reviewed by Katelynne Shimkus
