A masterful piece of storytelling, I could not put down this book.
This is a modern literary gothic novel, but also, an epic love story and wow was it good! Some people find themselves gifted with the ability to be a Binder, whether they want it or not, one who has the power to bind memories into books. These tend to be bad, or traumatic, memories, ones that people would rather forget. But what if you had memories bound that you want back?
We follow Emmet, as he finds out he is a born Binder, and a very talented one at that, as he begins his apprenticeship in a ramshackle country manor house, all the way to the seedier world of the big city, and the different lives, and ethics, of the binding trade and it’s players. It is also a beautiful love story, which is slowly revealed as the book progresses, and you will be very much drawn to these characters, and find yourself rooting for them. A book of three parts, which will keep you flipping pages into the wee hours. ~ Reviewed by Becky Doherty

Oh, the sass! How I missed a snarky heroine! The cover art says it all - from the skull facepaint (badassery), sword in hand (well-researched swordplay and dueling with varying weapons), smashing through skeletons (creepy necrotic fantasy) and - and - THE AVIATOR SHADES. Gideon is my hero and I want to be her when I grow up and when you finish this book you will make all your friends read it so you can have EMOTIONS about it together. UGH. FEELS. YASS. ~ Reviewed by Katelynne Shimkus

Necromancers. Ladies with swords. Swords wielded by lady necromancers. Listen, if this isn't hooking you, I don't know what will. Gideon herself is the most self-assured protagonist I have read in a long time, with wit and actual competence to match. Mix in a conspiracy involving the immortal emperor, eight houses vying for supremacy, and a dash of LGBT+ representation naturally woven throughout and you have, hands down, an early contender for my favorite book of the year. ~ Reviewed by Andrew Bugenis

This is one of those books where I never minded the page count, because I didn't want the story to end. Akin to later Harry Potters in length, darkness, and quality, this story follows twinned characters from their early childhood through their intertwined destiny. You will be drawn in as inevitably and fiercely as they are. ~ Reviewed by Katelynne Shimkus

Engaging debut novel centered around the murder of a student at an private school for young mages. But it's Ivy Gamble PI, a broken human who has struggled for years with the fact she is non-magical, that is the story's strength. Now her biggest case happens to be at the school where her estranged twin sister is a teacher. ~ Reviewed by Ben Parker

This fantasy novel from the Booker-winning Jamaican novelist draws not on Germanic mythology but African. The fantastic creatures which are strange, novel, and terrifying are worth it alone. Lightning vampire birdmen, blood thirsty spirits that run across the ceiling, a swarm of ravenous bugs that act like chiggers, a gay metamorphosing leopard, vicious hyena ladies…James’ imagination, prose, and brilliant use of unfamiliar source material is entrancing. It’s a really cool book, and a wonderfully fresh unforgettable universe with a thrilling quest narrative. The emotional core of this book is a formerly-enslaved talkative giant, an “ogo,” with a heart of gold, giant brass knuckles, and vast guilt named “Sadogo.” ~ Reviewed by Dafydd Wood
