The best book of 2012 is this luminescent biography of the controversial artist, whose imagination flowered as AIDS laid waste to his New York. An unforgettable life and a remarkable time, drawn with the immediacy of subway graffiti. ~ Reviewed by Charles Bottomley

Wreck This Blog Post

Casting about for inspiration for this space today, I paced the sales floor and scanned the shelves. I meandered through various websites. Thought about Hunger Games, Downton Abbey, Tim Tebow. Then thought better. I asked our graphic designer and my office mate if she wanted to switch chairs. I’d create the April calendar and she could do a rant.

An already meager well seemed drier than usual.

Then I remembered the book I gave my ten year old daughter just a few days ago–Wreck This Journal. It’s a book about creativity that encourages you to unleash your destructive urges. Each mostly blank page includes a bit of instruction that if done thoroughly and without inhibition will result in a real mess. Wipe your feet on this page. Use this page as a napkin. Glue random items here. Keri Smith, the creator of this book and others like it including This Is Not a Book and Mess, is onto something here. You never know where a good idea is going to come from. A coffee stain or a paper chain? Wreck This Journal and find out. It was definitely a good idea giving the book to my daughter. Now everyone in the fifth grade wants one.

Just as terrific as his The Fourth Part of the World and for the same reasons: Lester teaches, entertains, and inspires...even for those of us with minimal familiarity with medieval art and science. In the process he can literally change the way we see our world. ~ Reviewed by Bill Lewis

When we look at a photograph, do we see what's really there? A forensic examination of history's most famous photographs--from the Crimean War to Abu Ghraib--that reads like a great detective story. The conclusions Morris reaches, however, are equally applicable to our own family album of memories. ~ Reviewed by Charles Bottomley
