There are many levels of fun: paintings, gorillas and even a baby elephant! Ivan has been taken from the jungle as a young gorilla and raised as a human baby. But when he becomes too big to take care of, he is put into a domain (a cage) at a local mall that has an elephant named Stella, a creaky-music carousel, parrot and a ring where some animals perform. But when baby Ruby (a curious baby elephant) joins their motley crew, Ivan has bigger problems than getting enough bananas, TV time and a comfortable spot when Bob the dog sleeps on his tummy—he promises Stella he’ll help Ruby get to a zoo. Sparse text packs a punch that will have you laughing; crying and sharing with your gorilla…I mean children…family and friends! ~ Reviewed by Jeanette

Eleanor's first and favorite babysitter, Bibi, has moved away to Florida to take care of her ill father. But Eleanor needs Bibi to take care of her! What a way to start your August and end your summer: her best friend is away for the summer, her dad has invited Agnes from upstairs to play and to add insult to injury her parents have gotten her a new babysitter, Natalie! Eleanor is convinced that this is the worst idea yet! Truly like pickle juice on a cookie kind of August! However, Natalie proves to have a few tricks up her sleeves, Agnes has a surprise, phones make best friends not so far away and there is a little thing called writing a letter to Bibi (even if the mail is horribly slow in bringing her response!). As the summer moves along, Eleanor starts to realize that even though you might not like changes, they can be fun too! Sternberg's first novel is a lyrical look at friendship and the serious growing pains a third grader can experience! ~ Reviewed by Jeanette

Starring an Owl, a couple of Penguins and other Surprises

With another movie based on a book that has come out to theaters, it has made me think of favorite books that have been also made into movies.

A favorite (if not odd choice) of How to Eat Fried Worms by Thomas Rockwell is one of my first memories of devouring a book and enjoying it. So, when the movie came out, I was more than a little intrigued. Would it hold up to my memories of laughing, eehwwing and cheering on our hero? Unfortunately, it lost a little something when transformed to the big screen for me. However, other books have surprisingly (for me at least) have had the honor of enjoyment in both page and screen.

I have been delighted by Hoot by Carl Hiassan in both movie and book form. Movie Hoot is a good adaptation to the Carl Hiaasen novel of the same name. The highlights of the book (the friendship between three unlikely people, alligators in the port-a-potty, the environmental message) are all there. At the same time, it is a great family movie. The including of Jimmy Buffett (as well as a nod to the author) makes this a movie your entire family will enjoy. Read the book and then watch the movie (then re-read the book)! Hiassan’s introduction to the world of middle and young adult readers was as flawless as his stories are powerful, funny and entertaining. Friendship stories are many, but there is only one Hoot.
