Based loosely on the author's experience as an only child of divorced parents whose mother found her a couple of “stepsisters,” this fiction graphic novel is a realistic look at coming of age in a place you feel you have no business being in. Jen must not only deal with some funky chickens and their weird habits, she must deal with Walter (her mothers’ boyfriend), her mother’s deer-eaten garden, the Farmers Market and two new “sisters” (Walter’s girls) every weekend. Typical issues happen (Jen has issues with math, she and Andy butt heads, Walter insists on calling her Jenny, even her mom seems to be against her). The insecurities we all tend to face at least once comes to light in this heavily illustrated, brightly colored, perfectly detailed book for ages 10 to 14. One could even go as young as 8 or 9 due to the fact there is “drama” but not "teen drama." ~ Reviewed by Jeanette

Beatriz’s beloved grandfather has died. Soon after, she starts to hear his voice come from his guitar, asking her to finish the song he never was able to finish. His “killer” song. But as Beatriz’s obsession goes deeper, as she pulls away from her friends, one starts to wonder is this song literally the thing that will kill Beatriz? A beautiful, dark story of the obsession of perfection; of music and of life. Yet, there is hope at the end of it all, too. For ages 14 and up, with heavy adult crossover appeal. ~ Reviewed by Jeanette

Mixing the classic coming-of-age story of trying to fit in but cannot all with modern elements. There are puns, bad jokes and aliens. Some breath oxygen others methane. There are aliens that look like parrots and others who like Chef’s Surprise for lunch. There is the typical camp humor, the obtaining of badges like teleportation, building robots and study of scat. But the main theme that of friendship and working together. Fun, bright, rich illustrations complement the text and help move the story along. ~ Reviewed by Jeanette
