Not an easy read for themes and there are no chapter breaks. There are a few spots where the story line takes a breath, but that is it. And that theme? How do you break up with someone who has broken up with you?” There is a lot going on in this 14 to adult graphic novel. Valero-O’Connell literally “paints” a picture of these characters in a manner that shows you who they are. Teens and adults should read this just to see “what is out there” for gender/sexuality stories but also, to read a story that shows how a relationship regardless who the partners are has its ups and downs and sometimes, no matter how good it feels, can be most toxic. ~ Reviewed by Jeanette

This is a simple, realistic and just overall nice story about friendship. The authors afterwards detailing their own experience was a surprising, but welcomed, touch. And while it is a graphic novel, it reads like a novel. ~ Reviewed by Jeanette

Having taught the brilliant Y.A. novel Speak to at-risk teens, I bristled when a friend loaned me the book's graphic-novel edition. I do not 'read' graphic novels. Yet not long after beginning this version, I felt author Laurie Halse Anderson's narrative influence, her novel's haunting voice seeming emanate from Emily Carroll's stark illustrations. Set amid sparse details and fewer words, the drawings character the novel's same horrific tonal qualities, provoking fear, and casting a gloom about each page's design. The work's narrator slowly removes herself from her surroundings, intimating the hurt that her silence 'speaks,' until the reader begins fights back with her. ~ Reviewed by Ray Marsocci

Saints is the second book in the two book graphic series, Boxer & Saints While it is shorter than Boxers, it still packs a lot of story. We see how Four-Girl (later Vibiana), the unwanted fourth-girl of her family, defies the odds by living and dealing with a strict, old-school Chinese family ruled by her Grandfather. We even see how her story connects with Boa’s in Boxers. A tie-in with Joan of Arc brings this story into the Christian story of the Boxer Rebellion. ~ Reviewed by Jeanette

In this first graphic novel of the Boxer & Saints two-book series, Yang created a unique and fascinating graphic novel for teens. And while it is not so much a book of history, it mixes the history of 20th-centurey China with the journey of a young man coming of age and perhaps, making wrong choices along the way. Of course, it is possible the choices he made were the only ones that could have been made. Due to violence and other mature content and context, not recommend for under (mature) 13-year-olds. ~ Reviewed by Jeanette
