Annie and Nico, modern day kids have an event in the present that will set them off on an adventure through time. The information is as up to date as possible (do you know the Mongolian army’s connection to the spread of the Black Death?). You will see the parallels to our own recent issues and learn about how we came to be able to fight it as quickly as we were able to. (Considering one era of plague lasted hundreds of years, it happened quickly.) This thoughtful and accessible book is a great way to be introduced to the history of plagues, pandemics, even the history of travel/merchants, medical and scientific history, and discoveries. This series is a perfect addition to the classroom and for the parent and child to sit and talk about the subject one-on-one. ~ Reviewed by Jeanette

Set in 1885 Sierra Nevada in the wake of the Chinese Exclusion Act, this beautifully illustrated graphic novel follows Mei, who works with her father serving food on a logging site. As a means of escape and entertainment, Mei comes up with the mythical heroine Auntie Po (her take on classic heroes like Paul Bunyan), whose stories begin to blend with Mei's own. A powerful and ambitious book which tackles complex themes and subject matter, all from the perspective of a preteen. ~ Reviewed by Virginia Edinger

When Garlic, her fruit and vegetable friends and Witch Agnes see smoke coming from the (they thought) abandoned castle, their imaginations run wild. And when Witch Agnes learns there is a vampire now living there, the theories of why the vampire is there and what he plans on doing move faster than water downstream! When Celery “volunteers” Garlic to find out what is going on, she must overcome her fears, but also must act because she loves her family and the people of the village. What will a poor little Garlic (who just wants to take naps, be with her friend Carrot, and help at the market) do? The illustrations make you feel like you are in a European village when vampires, witches and sentient vegetables and fruits lived (mostly) in harmony.
Paulsen created an adorable story about a plucky little garlic who has more courage than she realizes and a message about not judging a book by its cover. There is an atmosphere of old world, classic tale to the story, along with a hearty dose of modern sensibilities. ~ Reviewed by Jeanette
