What a delightful way to introduce young elementary students to Social Studies! This tale, based on a true story, tells of the German baker who helped win the American Revolution by baking bread for General Washington’s troops and luring the Hessians away from the British army with his delicious gingerbread. I picked up a book. Not unusual. But the subject was: an autobiography of ballet dancer, Michaela DePrince. Someone I was unfamiliar with...but I know few dancers, let alone ballet dancers. Yet, the cover photograph of Taking Flight by Michaela and Elaine DePrince said, "Read me!"
Her name was Mabinty Bangura. As a very young child, her parents were killed due to Sierra Leones war and diseases. Her uncle sold her to an orphanage where she became, Number -27. Suffering abuse by the "aunties" who cared for the children and even by the children themselves (until her imagination made her friends), she would try to learn as much as she could. Her name was Mabinty Bangura. When she was a very young child, both her parents were killed due to war and diseases of Sierra Leone. Her uncle sold her to an orphanage where she would be known as Number -27. Here the horrors of her culture and war meant she was barely surviving. Only after Mabinty was adopted by an American family that things changed. She became Michaela. She gained a new Mama and Papa, older brothers, a new sister (her best friend from the orphanage) and later other younger sisters. And Michaela would be able to follow her new found passion: ballet. Told in her own voice, Michaela and her mother Elaine, show the journey of one child who has beaten the odds. ~ Reviewed by Jeanette

Open the book on one side: we see Malala Yousafzai. She spoke out so girls could go to school. Flip it over and we see Iqbal Masih. He spoke out against child slavery in the carpet trade. (READ MORE)
