Have you heard of a Tattlesnake or a Braindeer? How about a Magpipe? In Stardines, poet Jack Prelutsky introduces readers to sixteen strange creatures, writing a poem about each. Berger's collage illustrations accompany each poem, displaying Prelutsky's creatures in scenes inspired by the work of Joseph Cornell. Absurd, creative, and funny, Prelutsky's poems will spark imaginations. ~ Reviewed by Marika McCoola

This collection of legends and poetry is a classic in Spain that you read in on your teenage years. If you read it as an adult you may be surprised that you liked it so much when you were younger, as it could be considered a little clichéd. However, for many Spaniards, it’s their first introduction to poetry as it was in my case. As for the legends part of it, I always remember being fascinated by the story of a man who gets locked inside the cathedral of Toledo at night. I think that story might be the reason why I don’t like to be alone with religious statues. This book is a great Romantic introduction to poetry and fiction. ~ Reviewed by Adriana Gómez Piccolo

Follow Along

As you know, April is poetry month. I have always enjoyed reading different types of poetry and even trying my hand at writing poetry. My reading lists have seen traditional, not so traditional, rhyming, not so rhyming, prose poetry, classical poems and modern poetry.

But when I picked up Follow Follow: A Book of Reverso Poems by Marilyn Singer I knew this was something wonderful, different and absolutely amazing!

The first line the poem starts poem one, but it ends the second poem. The first poem is, in fact, flipped so that the second poem is the exact same worded poem as before. However it is completely different with a few tweaks to punctuation and capitalization. Each time the meaning (and sometimes the narrator) of the poem changes. The combination poems complement each other and tell amazing stories! (READ MORE)

By Doug Cushman, Doug Cushman (Illustrator)

While the hero of Pigmares should “never watch monsters on film before bed” we all should read Pigmares: Porcine Poems of the Silver Scream...I mean Screen! From Frankenswine, to Earth vs. the Flying Sausage to Pig Kong each poem is a wonderful tongue-in-cheek good time. You’ll recognize each movie spoof (but if you don’t, there is a guide at the end) in this rhyming poetry book. For the child in us all, Cushman’s poems are laugh-out and read-out-loud fun! (Not just for fans of poetry, can be a great introduction for the reluctant poet.) ~ Reviewed by Jeanette
