While the hero of Pigmares should “never watch monsters on film before bed” we all should read Pigmares: Porcine Poems of the Silver Scream...I mean Screen! From Frankenswine, to Earth vs. the Flying Sausage to Pig Kong each poem is a wonderful tongue-in-cheek good time. You’ll recognize each movie spoof (but if you don’t, there is a guide at the end) in this rhyming poetry book. For the child in us all, Cushman’s poems are laugh-out and read-out-loud fun! (Not just for fans of poetry, can be a great introduction for the reluctant poet.) ~ Reviewed by Jeanette

Did you know that winter is the warmest season? The young narrator of this delightful picture book explains why. Written and beautifully illustrated on watercolor paper, by Lauren Stringer, the simple, yet fantastically warm, text shows why you just might have to dream about summer to cool off from all the wonderful warmth that winter creates. So, grab a hot cup of chocolate, snuggle up by a burning fire, put on your pajamas with big warm feet and enjoy! ~ Reviewed by Jeanette

Starting in the now, the signs call you to see the live nativity. Peek into the manger, slide into the traditional Christmas tale as the shepherds tend the sheep and hear the Angel. Finally come back to today and look down upon the townspeople singing carols and being a family. Some early readers can read by themselves but all will enjoy being read to. Simple (but not simplistic) text and illustrations that are modern with a hint of classical make this the perfect story for reading or giving. ~ Reviewed by Jeanette

A boy and his father look for a very special tree: the ones that the "tears" (or sap) come from. When the boy harvests his very first tear it is very large (as big as a hen's egg)! This is wonderful since when they sell it, it will fetch good money for his family. However, this tear is destined to be a very special gift for a very special baby.

Park gives an afterword with more information on the Christmas story, myrrh and her observations about the significance of the story. The illustrations are soft, subtle and extremely detailed. The colors are muted so when the red, blue and finally the light surrounding the Christ child are seen, they become a focal point. You read the illustrations as much as the text. This is a sit-down and read, not a skim quickly through book. This is not another Three Wise Men/Christmas story. It is a story about an everyday young boy and his father at their job. It is about the ordinary and how it is perhaps the most important part of a very important story. For older children 5 to 8 and adults. ~ Reviewed by Jeanette

Maomao’s father works far away and only comes home for a few days around Chinese New Year. Zhu Cheng-Liang’s illustrations are soft and sweet as Yu Li-Quong’s text of the traditions of the Chinese New Year. We see Maomao’s first reaction to her strange father (until he gets a haircut and shave) to the touching moment at the time when her father must leave them again. A great story for children 5 up. Perfect for a read-aloud at home, school or your local story time. ~ Reviewed by Jeanette
