"On the night before Christmas, deep under the sea Marine life was waiting with expectant glee.” So starts this Kathie Kelleher gem. A little lobster happily tells how mermaids dream of periwinkles; how eight faster than dolphins tiny sea horses are called by name and how a jolly (familiar) sea creature fills stockings with care. Kelleher takes the beloved classic and makes it fun and creative. Dan Andreasen’s characteristic illustrations perfectly catch the wave of the text. You and your child will love pairing this with Clement Clarke Moore’s original poem. Or start a new tradition with a new tail…tale. ~ Reviewed by Jeanette

The telling of how the “spectacular event” occurs, through the eyes of multi-colored birds, is a beautiful and simple rendition of the Christmas Story. The signature artist style of dePaola is the perfect addition to his soft text. The perfect gift to give to others or yourself. A must read for the holiday season.~ Reviewed by Jeanette

Halloween: Not Just for the Candy

I've mentioned I love Halloween and not just for the candy. Halloween books are great, too! No cavities as you devour them! Below are treats aimed at our younger ghosts, ghouls and goblins!

My first choice is for the poet, film buff, lover of the silly or pig-lover. The narrator of Pigmares should “never watch monsters on film before bed.” But we should read Pigmares: Porcine Poems of the Silver Scream...I mean Screen! From Frankenswine to Earth vs. the Flying Sausage to Pig Kong each poem is wonderfully tongue-in-cheek. You’ll recognize each movie spoof in this rhyming poetry book (but if not, don’t fear! A guide at the end assists you). For the child in us all, Doug Cushman’s poems are laugh-out-loud fun! (For the reluctant poetry reader or the well-versed reader.)

Creepy is in the eye of the beholder with Ten Creepy Monsters by Carey Armstrong-Ellis. A Halloween twist to the “Ten Little Bears” story starts with 10 Creepy Monsters out one night and how each slowly leaves the group until there is just one very special monster left.  With illustrations that are just as fun as this All-Hallows Eve read, there are surprises at every turn! Not so Creepy Creepy Tales

I like carrots. I do not care for creepy carrots, unless they are the ones in Creepy Carrots by Aaron Reynolds (illustrated by Peter Brown).

Jasper Rabbit loves carrots, too. Especially Crackenhopper Field carrots! He sneaks in all the time to eat them! But when Jasper starts seeing carrots everyplace he goes (even when he is going to bed) the tables turn. These once sweet carrots are or acting not very nice! He is convinced they are out to get him! But no amount of searching by him or his parents can bring up these monstrous crunchy morsels. What’s a poor rabbit to? But Jasper has a plan! Will it stop the carrots from coming after him?
