Mackie Doyle is a replacement. Switching the human Mackie with the now Mackie was just the start. The town knows these things happen. The town knows Mackie is a Replacement. But the town doesn’t talk about it. And when a local child “dies” Makcie has two options: help his classmate, Tate find out the truth or to save himself. Because the human world with its iron and blood and consecrated ground is literally killing him. How can he save himself? Perhaps his “real” family (the beings of the underground) is where he belongs and he should let the human world fend for itself. But at the same time, odd things are keeping him here. Gothic overtones make this aged 14 up first time novel a delightful read. ~ Reviewed by Jeanette

Malcolm is often mistaken for a mouse, but is a rat. However, just because he is physically a rat does that mean he has to act like a rat? Or worse, a rat fink? When Malcolm (formerly a pet-shop rat and now a 5th grade pet at a local elementary school) is accused of being just that, can he solve the many mysteries that seem to keep happening? Can Malcolm clear his name, make friends with not only the other school pets (who keep their beloved school safe after the lankies (adults) and nutters (children) leave) but the nutters of his classroom (even though that is strictly forbidden)? A fantastic mix of fantasy, mystery and even a little romance! The twists and turns in are as many as the corridors of Malcolm’s new home! Fun illustrations by Brian Lies add to the adventure. ~ Reviewed by Jeanette

The Future is here (soon)

The future is just around the corner…or at least two months away with two new fun realistic fantasy novels. In a Fix by Linda Grimes and Death Warmed Over by Kevin J. Anderson.

Ciel is truly in a fix in Grimes gem of a novel, In a Fix.

Ciel has a unique talent: as a “human chameleon” she can make herself look exactly like someone else. Because of this, she decides to start a business where she can help wealthy clients take care of those “pesky” jobs of life (reconnecting with a dying loved one; dealing with the in-laws at the holidays and getting that marriage proposal from your boyfriend). But when that last job turns into something a little more dangerous (a phone call informing her to get of the house before it blows up) starts the ball rolling, Ciel's craziest assignment yet has just started! To get that proposal for her client she has to find out who kidnapped the potential fiancé, find out why he was kidnapped and figure out how her “sort of” cousin is involved. Piece of cake! Now if only her over protective family, her brothers (hot) best friend and modern day (possible terrorist) Vikings would stay out of her way, things will be perfect……! Seriously funny, this modern day Jane Bond meets fantastical situations will have you laughing and wondering how Ciel will get out each wonderful situation. (READ MORE)

Miles and his family flee their volcanic ash-covered city for what they hope is their safe cabin in the woods. The family must deal not only with the immediate effects of the eruptions such as lack of sunlight, food and water, they must deal with others who are also just trying to survive. A unique combination of science fiction and adventure, Weaver's story is frightfully realistic and thought provoking. ~ Reviewed by Jeanette
