An ambitious district attorney sees a grisly double murder as his ticket to bigger things. Small matter, at least to him, that the man awaiting execution for the crime in Sing Sing is innocent. This is a gripping, true-life story of justice thwarted and betrayed. ~ Reviewed by Alden Graves

The ambition elixir

I initially started to read Slaughter On a Snowy Morn for all the wrong reasons. The title was so intriguingly lurid that I put it aside in my "Good Intentions, But I'll Probably Never Really Read Stack" in my locker. I picked up Colin Evans' book just to pass some time during my lunch hour one day. It was a true crime story, but it read like diabolically crafted fiction. Hitchcock would have loved the wrongly accused man aspect. I was neatly hooked and delighted to be reeled in. I was sorry when my lunch hour was over.

On the surface, the tale is a familiar one: A high-profile, grisly double murder in an isolated community that isn't used to such rude intrusions, an ambitious district attorney who sees the case as his ticket to bigger things, a local sheriff whose previous experience with major crime involved farm animals, the taint of quack science, and the perfect fall guy -- a self-effacing, illiterate German immigrant who could barely speak English. People Who Eat Darkness

A young British hostess vanishes in Tokyo.  The only "clue" is a dodgy phone message left on her best friend's cellphone. Parry, a foreign correspondent who was on the case from the beginning, traces the story almost around the world.  An excellent true crime story.  I couldn't put it down. ~ Reviewed by Sarah Knight

Malcolm's thorough coverage of the murder trial of a female Bukharan Jewish doctor is a fascinating portrait of our legal system. Human frailties in everyone from the defendant to the judge turn the trial into the Greek tragedy referenced in the title. ~ Reviewed by Sarah Knight
