Both exciting and insightful. Military history enthusiasts will enjoy the accounts of infantrymen and their officers while those interested in policy and diplomacy will appreciate the explanations of counterinsurgency and it's implementation. For those who are skeptical of the United State's objective in Afghanistan, The Outpost is a worthwhile account of what could have been accomplished. ~ Reviewed by Nate George

A fatal day in May

On May 1,1915, the Lusitania, one of the world’s finest and fastest ocean liners, pulled away from Pier 54 in New York and headed out into the Atlantic with 1,959 people on board. The ship’s destination was Liverpool, but it only made it as far as the southern tip of Ireland, where the Lucy, as she was affectionately known, crossed paths with a German submarine. Her destruction was merciless and quickly over, accomplished with one torpedo that was immediately followed by a massive internal explosion. She disappeared beneath the chilly waters of the Irish Sea in only 18 minutes, leaving hundreds of men, women, and children adrift in the ocean, hoping against hope that help would come in time. Ms. Lower examines a little-known aspect of the Nazi reign of terror: the participation of women in the killing fields. Thousands of German women saw Hitler's ascension to absolute power as a great opportunity to break out of their stifling lives and advance the cause of saving the Aryan race from contamination. Mass murderers, some who blithely shot Jewish children, went home to the warmth of their families, content that they were doing what was expected of them. Stephen King could hardly imagine the horror. ~ Reviewed by Alden Graves

An important, absorbing, and frequently chilling, examination of the secret government program that brought hundreds of German scientists, doctors and their families - despite their political beliefs and wartime experiments - to America after WWII. An ethically questionable program that was undertaken to prevent the scientists from being recruited by the USSR. Did their work help us win the Cold War or prolong it? ~ Reviewed by Louise Jones
