Once again, Vowell has created a rich blend of history, humor, and politics; and turned a well known story into a book that you won't want to put down. Vowell tells the story of the American Revolution through the lens of the Marquis de Lafayette's involvement - and weaves that story with the tale of his return journey in 1824, and contemporary politics (yes, really). Detailed, insightful and very funny - this is a book you will enjoy as you read it, and will remember long after you've turned the last page. ~ Reviewed by Rachel Person

This is a book that I was very glad to discover. The AK-47 remains one of the most significant inventions of the 20th century and will no doubt remain an influential weapon for decades to come. In spite of this, most people remain ignorant of it's significance.
Chivers begins by explaining the origins of "mobile firepower" during the first world war. He then moves on to the revolutionary small arms developments of WWII and their influence on Mikhail Kalashnikov, a young engineer entrusted with one of the Soviet Union's most important projects: the development of a new infantry rifle that would surpass every rifle currently in use.
This thorough and readable account covers the evolution of infantry rifles that culminated in Kalashnikov's iconic design, as well as its antithesis, the AR-15/M-16. Includes analyses of the AK's lasting global influence on combat, security, revolution and politics. ~ Reviewed by Nate George

A gripping true story of courage and resistance in occupied Paris. Dr. Summer Jackson was the chief surgeon at the American Hospital. After observing the ever-escalating levels of Nazi brutality, Dr. Jackson, at great danger to himself and his family, became directly involved in an underground network that smuggled imperiled people to safety in Spain and Great Britain. This is a moving testimony to the power of the human spirit. ~ Reviewed by Alden Graves

Both exciting and insightful. For those who are skeptical of the United State's objective in Afghanistan, The Outpost is a worthwhile account of what could have been accomplished. ~ Reviewed by Nate George
