Even avid readers of the American Revolution know far too little about the remarkable Marquis de Lafayette except that he was young and enthusiastic, that Washington's fondness suggests something like a father-son relationship, and that he certainly has a lot of "things" named for him all across our country. That Lafayette was both a genuine hero and at times a critical actor during the war is frequently overlooked by even our most illustrious historians. That he went on to become a pivotal leader in the early part of the French Revolution (and suffered terribly as a result) is hardly known to most Americans. And finally, that he lived long enough to witness America begin to grow and prosper and to see his own country survive its revolutionary excesses is an amazing story that deserves telling. James R. Gaines has given us a superb history that remedies all of the above and does so in extraordinarily pleasureable fashion. It's a big story involving two countries and two continents but Gaines is remarkable in keeping the story smooth and accessible all the way; especially when Lafayette returns to revolutionary France where explosive chaos (not to mention pronunciation challenges) frequently befuddle American readers. This is one of those books where the excellence of the work matches the appealing nature of its subject. And the Marquis is a most deserving fellow. ~ Reviewed by Bill Lewis

The Father of All Things is a powerful story about the legacy of the Vietnam War and its lingering effect on one man, his family and his marriage. It is a well researched history of the war, a colorful travel book describing Vietnam today and a wonderful and emotional memoir recounting the author's life as a child of a war veteran and their trip together back to Vietnam 40 years after the war. ~ Reviewed by Liz Barnum

It seems almost a cliche to remind Americans that the Civil War was about much more than a military struggle to preserve the Union and end slavery. When peace resumed in 1865 the struggle for American equality and the meaning of the constitution continued for another century and at the beginning of the 21st century the legacy of that struggle continues to resonate. THE DEVIL'S OWN WORK by Barnet Schecter is a carefully researched and extremely well written book that throws a bright light on a tragic event that brutally exposed so many of the monumental and volatile issues at stake. First rate and extremely important. ~ Reviewed by Bill Lewis

This is the true account of the Battle of Lake Tanganyika during WWI. "Never heard of it," you say. If you've seen the movie The African Queen, then you loosely know the story. Follow the true exploits of Commander Geoffrey Spicer-Samson as he takes a crew of 28, thousands of native porters, a few skirts for comfort(he wore them to beat the heat), personally monogrammed cigarettes, and not enough medecine to go around. I read the Times review of this and decided that I just had to read this story for myself. Foden uses some of the best charecterization that I have ever come across in a non-fiction title. He makes the reader really care about this obscure battle that is not talked about in the history books, in Tanzania or within the British Admiralty itself. Any non-fiction, adventure, or just plain story lover will enjoy this little gem of a book.
