An astonishing story of suffering and mortality that rivals Andersonville in scale and casts a very disturbing light on British attitudes toward Americans. It powerfully examines the universal human capacity for inhumanity. On a lighter note: you're gonna love Ethan Allen! ~ Reviewed by Bill Lewis

Jan and Antonina Zabinski were caretakers of the majestic Warsaw Zoo when Germany seized Poland in 1939. The story of their expertise and companionship to a vast menagerie of exotic animals makes for a fascinating read all by itself, but these same qualities were highly valued by the Nazis. The Zabinskis used this tenuous advantage and bravely risked everything to rescue several hundred Jews imprisoned at the Warsaw Ghetto. Ackerman's writing shines with great sensitivity and moves with a riveting pace. ~ Reviewed by Nancy Scheemaker

For decades John Ferling has been one of the absolute finest early American academic historians; but it remains a mystery as to why he isn't better known (and admired) by more readers of American history...especially in light of the fact that his meticulous scholarship and insightful analyses are matched by his crystal clear writing. His study of the tumultuous 1800 presidential contest (ADAMS VS. JEFFERSON, pb, 2005) and his extraordinary explanation of the political story of the Revolutionary era (A LEAP IN THE DARK pb, 2004) are already considered standard works within their fields and both are immensely readable and enjoyable for all of us "armchair" historians. And there are many earlier books by Ferling that are just as good. Now comes his most recent work, ALMOST A MIRACLE, which should finally give Ferling the wide readership he certainly merits. Why is that, you may ask ? Because ALMOST A MIRACLE is now the standard single volume history of the Revolutionary War. Period. Exclamation point. It's been about 25 years or more since the last complete histories were published and, as publishers and readers both know, interest in 18th century American history has skyrocketed in the intervening period. And so has the research and scholarship. In short, it's high time for an up to date history of the war and no one is more qualified than John Ferling to fill the bill. Enjoy, learn, and keep it handy on your shelf...for at least the next 20 or so years. ~ Reviewed by Bill Lewis
