Only because the set was handy, I took these CDs to pass the time in the car, anticipating a self-aggrandizing Hollywood tell-all. Boy was I wrong! Lear, at 90-something, in his own clear voice, tells his rags-to-riches story in a charming, funny and self-deprecating way. From his miserable childhood, to harrowing WWII service as a fighter pilot in Italy, to the shocking anecdotes about Hollywood stars, to legions of world leaders he's met, I had no idea that he should be a legend in his own time. Beyond his graciousness, his insider's account of the evolution of the great, radical TV shows of the 60s and 70s is fascinating. So sad now, to have to travel without being able to listen to him spinning yarns. Read the book if you can't abide audio-books, it'll be just as inspiring. ~ Reviewed by Heather Bellanca

Mo (or Moses) LoBeau received her name when she was rescued from a river after a hurricane. The Colonel who rescued her lost his memory in the storm and his past and Mo's are shrouded in mystery. Since then, Mo has been trying to find her upstream mom-- when she's not helping Miss Lana out at the Colonel's cafe or running about with her best friend Dale. But when a local man shows up dead, Mo decides to tackle a mystery besides her past. With delightful Southern flavor and just the right amount of quirkiness, Three Times Lucky is a thoroughly enjoyable mystery that will have readers guessing right up to the end. Shelia Turnage's voice brings the tale to life, her accent transporting the listener directly to the small town of Tupelo Landing, NC. A great choice for readers who enjoyed Pie by Sarah Weeks or The Secret Tree by Natalie Standiford. ~ Reviewed by Marika McCoola

The performances on this audio are superb: Tony Award-winning actress Barbara Rosenblat as the concierge of a posh Parisian apartment building, who hides her intelligence from the disdainful residents; and Cassandra Morris as the precocious child with whom she forms an alliance. Not often has Dickens been as well served in audio as he is here. Patrick Stewart adapts his legendary one-man show to the spoken word format, with excellent results-- he does not only all the voices (including Tiny Tim in falsetto) but also all the sound effects (including a peal of bells on Christmas morning). Stewart edits his own script and stays close to his source, choosing to include a surprising amount of Dickens' descriptive material, thereby preserving the flavor of the original better than many other recordings. Be forewarned, however: Stewart emphasizes what might be called the demonic strain in Scrooge's character: his "Bah, humbug!" isn't merely the exasperated aside of a peevish old man-- it is rumbling belch from the depths of Hell...

1971: Peter Brook's stage production of Lear comes to the screen in a dark, lacerating version shot on the wintry Jutland Peninsula in Denmark, featuring a superb cast headed by Paul Scofield in his towering performance as the King.

2007: Brook's Lear remains unavailable on DVD in a North American format; when this sad state of affairs will be remedied is anyones's guess...

In The Meantime, there is this assay by Scofield, fronting another excellent troupe in a Naxos recording made in 2001, and although the director and medium are different, much of his landmark performance from 1971 (the vocal portion, at any rate) persists, a reading by turns adamant, horrific, despairing and, at the end, hoarse and almost ghostly, as if the disasters befalling the old king have carried him beyond the grave before he can comprehend and give utterance. Two touchstones for this reviewer: Scofield's explosive "O reason not the need!", wherein the cossetings of a lifetime collapse in a howl and, at the opposite extreme, his "never, never, never, never, never", a death rattle Beckett would have savored. Other performers include Alec McGowen as Gloucester and Kenneth Branagh as the Fool. In all, as good a reminder as we're likely to have that Shakespeare is meant to be heard, if not seen.
