From childhood on, Charley Harper loved nature and art. With a twinkling eye, a knack for draftsmanship, and an art degree from the Art Academy of Cincinnati, Harper developed a simplified, playful style of illustrating birds, bugs, plants, and animals. “By the time I had illustrated The Golden Book of Biology and The Animal Kingdom . . . I knew what I wanted to be when I grew up—a wildlife artist.” Harper (American, 1922–2007) painted everything from ladybugs in his own backyard to humpback whales in the Atlantic Ocean. With over 150 stickers to decorate your days, you can spend the whole year with Harper and his wildlife friends. Perhaps you will party with puffins on your birthday or share a summer barbecue with a “raccoon on the cob.” Happy stickering!

If you spied one of these creatures in your living room you’d probably run, but in Edward Gorey’s world, they’re quite at home. The Boggerslosh hides behind bottles, the Yawfle stares in the corner, and all manner of unsettling events take place at the gazebo. Edward St. John Gorey (1925–2000) created a legion of crosshatched creatures that have delighted his fans for decades.

Alphabetically arranged and chronologically created, the collected canvases inside this calendar form a compendium of artist Mike Wilks’s The Ultimate Alphabet. Delight in the dozen depictions of selected letters, where you may find a farthingale, a fire-eater, and more than a few flights of fancy; observe an octopus overhead; or even spot the sketch of a squinch and a sampling of shells (please pardon the profuse iterations of alliterations).

Wilks (British, b. 1947) began writing and illustrating books in 1975 and rocketed to fame following publication of The Ultimate Alphabet in 1986. Today the book—alongside its annotated version detailing the more than 7,000 items drawn—is back in print as The Ultimate Alphabet: Complete Edition (Pomegranate, 2015). The twelve images in this calendar derive from this work.

Daniel Merriam’s surreal artworks combine a romantic Victorian sensibility with a dreamlike imagination. Merriam (American, b. 1963) grew up in a small village along the coast of Maine and taught himself to paint. He studied mechanical and architectural design and began a career as an architectural illustrator. Unfulfilled after a few years, he gave up commercial art to follow his dream of artistry. He built his skills and portfolio with fantasy-fueled drawings and paintings, including one titled Bubble Street. In 2012 he opened Bubble Street Gallery—an emporium celebrating creativity and the imagination in Sausalito, California—where he and other steampunk-infused artists showcase their work. Merriam’s artwork has been exhibited across the United States, Europe, and the Middle East. The twelve colorful images in this calendar provide just a glimpse of the wonderland of Merriam’s dreams.

Chinese-export watercolors were painted in port cities for sale to Western customers in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Until the middle of the nineteenth century, these were mostly souvenirs brought back by merchants and tourists. Afterwards, they became valued as artworks in their own right. The colors used were those common in Chinese painting, but primary colors tended to predominate later in the nineteenth century, particularly because the adoption of pith paper, made from a plant called tong cao (Tetrapanax papyrifer), allowed the painters to create images in brilliant colors as well as in very fine detail. The images in this calendar were painted by anonymous artists in China, ca. 1830–1871, and have been reproduced from an album in the collection of the Research Library of the American Museum of Natural History.
