I was so happy to find this wholly new take on the life of Joan of Arc. Rather than deifying Joan, the author skillfully chose to portray her secularly as a flesh and blood, strong-willed and prideful young woman who, rather than being ruled by faith, is driven by her belief in king and country. Because of her hardscrabble upbringing, she sees herself as a strong warrior. “And she thought, Faith didn’t save her life, and I would rather have the strength that keeps me alive to see a new morning.” The author creates such a complete and complex character you will be drawn deep into the book and not want it to end. A beautiful, beautiful book.
