Description

.... something rarely seen these days: poems that are uniquely formal and imaginative at the same time. Johnson calls them counter-quatrains because the enjambed trimeter tends to override the steadily rhymed stanzas (to me, suggesting an elegant hip-hop). But his lexicon advances further with metaphors that arrest the imagination. Altogether a unique literary experience which I invite you to enjoy as much as I do. -- Alan Britt, Gunpowder for Single-ball Poems

Oh Master Meter, Mistress Rhyme,
When you were young and in your prime
Your music was the anthem of its age.
But now your random footsteps fall
In rambling lines beyond recall
And poetry lies silent on its page.

So, Master Meter, Mistress Rhyme,
What makes your numbered ring a crime?
Who wrote your bank of memory off as debt?
Come, sing your song aloud, the kind
That rhyme and meter hold in mind,
For what we can't rememeber --we forget.
--h.j.

About the Author

HANK JOHNSON was born in New York City and raised there by recording and broadcast singer-musicians in an atmosphere of folk songs, old hymns, jingles and popular tunes of bygone eras. Educated at Duke, North Carolina (Chapel Hill) and N.Y.U., he has taught at Western Michigan University, Skidmore College and Towson University, and served as Executive Director of the Maryland State Arts Council and Executive Vice-President of the Baltimore County Chamber of Commerce. He is the author of eleven produced plays, including musicals, and a novella, The Looking Glass Call (Banda Press International) and now lives with his wife in Hebron Township, New York.

Praise For…

One of the greatest pleasures in our encounter with the arts, primarily poetry, is a pervasive sense of a difficult thing done well, which is what these poems constantly achieve.... Johnson brings wit and passion into an uncommon and surprising alignment, while the sturdy metric that structures his poetry also structures the magic of his insights regarding the commonplace.... A significant pleasure indeed! —Barry Targan
