Staff Reviews

This is a mystery centered around two famous novelists; one, Harry Quebert, who has been arrested for allegedly killing a fifteen year girl he claims to have been in love with, thirty-three years previously; the other, Marcus Goldman, who is investigating and writing a book about the whole affair. Harry also is Marcus’ old professor and mentor, and we view their relationship through past and present. It takes place in Somerset, a quiet coastal town in New Hampshire, and we slowly unearth all the skeletons in the closets of it’s townsfolk. This is certainly a roller coaster ride of a read, with many, many twists and turns, but also a highly enjoyable one.
An excellent summer read!

Every once in a while we follow up on a customer's recommendation, and I'm glad I did. The body of a young girl is discovered in a famous writer's New Hampshire yard, and his famous protege investigates. Dicker's writing is worthy of every cliche: an unputdownable mystery whose surprises don't end until the very last page. Thanks, customer! — Charles Bottomley

“What at first glance appears to be another book by a promising young writer about the challenges of being a promising young writer quickly turns into a thrilling murder mystery. A blocked and struggling author sets out to prove his mentor's innocence, and as the narrative slides back and forth through time, the truth proves to be as elusive as the innocence of any of the characters. In the end, everyone is guilty -- not in a Murder on the Orient Express kind of way -- but in the dozens of small ways the denizens of any town can be complicit in wrongdoings. A compelling read!”
— Catherine Weller, Weller Book Works, Salt Lake City, UT

This #1 internationally bestselling thriller, an ingenious book within a book, is about the disappearance of a fifteen-year-old New Hampshire girl and, thirty years later, a young American writer's determination to clear his mentor's name and find the inspiration for his next bestseller.

August 30, 1975. This is the day fifteen-year-old Nola Kellergan is glimpsed fleeing through the woods before she disappears the day Somerset, New Hampshire, loses its innocence.

Thirty-three years later, Marcus Goldman, a successful young novelist, visits Somerset to see his mentor, Harry Quebert, one of America's most respected writers, and to find a cure for his writer's block as his publisher's deadline looms. But Marcus plans are violently upended when Harry is suddenly and sensationally implicated in the cold-case murder of Nola Kellergan whom, he admits, he had an affair with. As the national media convicts Harry, Marcus launches his own investigation, following a trail of clues through his mentor's books, the backwoods and isolated beaches of New Hampshire, and the hidden history of Somerset's citizens and the man they hold most dear. To save Harry, his writing career, and eventually even himself, Marcus must answer three questions, all of which are mysteriously connected: Who killed Nola Kellergan? What happened one misty morning in Somerset in the summer of 1975? And how do you write a successful and "true" novel?

A global phenomenon, with rights sold in more than thirty countries, "The Truth about the Harry Quebert Affair" is a fast-paced, tightly plotted, cinematic literary thriller and an ingenious book within a book by a dazzling young writer.
