Staff Reviews

A beautiful story that immediately grabs you and never lets you go. The mystery surrounding the characters keeps you engaged, and the reveal is nothing less than heartbreaking. All of this, combined with stunning prose, makes this a must read. — Hilary Wartinger

Three young adults unravel a mystery that holds ethical influence over humanity's future. This is a superb story that's meant to grasp you whether you unravel its mysteries yourself or not, and is a mediation on the importance of each other's past and how easily it is to overlook details when we're too involved with our own lives. But most of all how essential it is not to waste our time, and to fight till the very end for the lives we desire, even if the road seems fruitless.

Alex Bell

Ishiguro's wondrous prose breaks my heart every time I return to this heartbreaking story of three children in a boarding school in the English countryside and what happens to them as they grow older. Very suspenseful, and slyly sci-fi, this beautiful book remains one of my all time favorites. The movie adaptation with Andrew Garfield, Carrie Mulligan, and Kiera Knightley is very tender and romantic, but the book is better as usual. — Paul Thompson

Description

NOBEL PRIZE WINNER From the acclaimed, bestselling author of The Remains of the Day comes “a Gothic tour de force" (The New York Times) with an extraordinary twist—a moving, suspenseful, beautifully atmospheric modern classic.

As children, Kathy, Ruth, and Tommy were students at Hailsham, an exclusive boarding school secluded in the English countryside. It was a place of mercurial cliques and mysterious rules where teachers were constantly reminding their charges of how special they were.

Now, years later, Kathy is a young woman. Ruth and Tommy have reentered her life. And for the first time she is beginning to look back at their shared past and understand just what it is that makes them special—and how that gift will shape the rest of their time together.
