If you've read Leigh Bardugo's Six Of Crows this is the larger world of that book, and I would suggest reading the Grisha series. And if you haven't read anything by Leigh Bardugo yet, pick up this book, and start reading. This is the first book of the Grisha Series and it centers around a girl named Alina who so far has grown up as a soldier in a country at war, but at a crossing of the mysterious and dangerous "Fold" Alina soon learns that she is a Grisha, and possesses powers that are invaluable to her country. She's whisked off to the Little Palace, where all Grisha are trained, and kept under the watch of the mysterious Darkling. I enjoyed the way Bardugo mixes magic and war, and all the political machinations that take place within this book between the Darkling, the Grisha, the soldiers and their enemies. I will warn that I started out not liking Alina , but she quickly grew on me, although I feel that she has a lot more character growth to go through within the next books to really become a great character. I'm interested to see how the rest of this series plays out, and how if at all, it ties into the world of Six of Crows. — Amy Williams

Shadow and Bone follows the story of Alina Starkov, an orphan and mapmaker in her country’s army who discovers while protecting her best friend Mal that she has had a power inside her unlike any other; the ability to summon light. She is what this world would call a Grisha; those with unique abilities that serve Ravka’s king. She is immediately whisked away by the Grisha’s leader, The (tall, dark and handsome) Darkling, to train with her new powers among other Grisha at the Little Palace, where Alina grows to learn strength, self-confidence, power and friendship in a community that she was born to belong in, but just when things start to look up for Alina the story spins on its head and goes in a direction that both shocked and impressed me.
The novel has a few typical YA tropes that it definitely didn’t need but it completely surprised with its originality and dark climax. By the end, Alina is no longer the naive, straight and narrow child we see in the beginning; she is an all out Grisha Sun Summoning badass with MULTIPLE love interests pining for her. Alina shines so brightly by the story's end that I fear that anyone who claims to care for her will only one dim her brightness.

The first book in the YA Grishaverse series sets up the fantasy world of monsters, magic, and secrets. The vaguely Russian country of Ravka is at war with the vaguely Scandinavian country of Fjerda, and Ravka is ruled over by the Grisha - magic users. It's a world full of intrigue and suspense. Turned into a Netflix series, Bardugo's page turning narrative is very addictive. The story follows a young girl named Alina who doesn't know she has magical powers until she crosses this cool Shadow fold of darkness and discovers her gift which sets her into the company of the grisha and away from the soldier she loves. — Paul Thompson

“This debut fantasy riffs on Russian history and folklore. The orphan, Alina, doesn't know that she controls powers beyond her mapmaker trade and is thrust into royalty and the Darkling's inner circle, the magical, elite Grishas. With vivid characters, exciting and twisty plots, monsters, romance, and a fully developed otherworld, this is a high fantasy thriller of the first order. I look forward to more from this talented author!”

Soldier

Now Alina will enter a lavish world of royalty and intrigue as she trains with the Grisha, her country’s magical military elite—and falls under the spell of their notorious leader, the Darkling. He believes Alina can summon a force capable of destroying the Shadow Fold and reuniting their war-ravaged country, but only if she can master her untamed gift.

As the threat to the kingdom mounts and Alina unlocks the secrets of her past, she will make a dangerous discovery that could threaten all she loves and the very future of a nation.

Welcome to Ravka . . . a world of science and superstition where nothing is what it seems.
