I was completely captivated by this utterly original story of a successful 40-something woman who embarks on a cross-country road trip that morphs into a journey of self-discovery. July explores motherhood, desire, autonomy, creativity, sexuality, marriage and menopause in ways both shockingly strange and stunningly familiar. I was captivated by the character's voice--by turns wry and raw, fierce and funny, outrageous and tender, kinky and kind, but always, always rigorously honest. A propulsive novel that grabbed hold of me from the first sentence and never loosened its grip until the last transcendent page.

This book thrilled me, seduced me, awed me. Our narrator (a quasi July figure) is an artist living in Los Angeles with her husband and child, fairly stable and fairly happy. After receiving a hefty royalty check, she decides she'll spend it frivolously on a trip to New York, to which she'll drive cross country and hopefully generate an idea for her next big project. Almost as soon as she sets out, though, the trip is derailed, and she settles into a motel room half an hour from her house. She remains there for the entirety of the trip, spending her big check on redecorating the room and falling into a passionate infatuation with the local Hertz dealership employee. Supporting this bizarre premise is July's writing and imagination, so expansive, generous, and searching. Sexuality, perimenopause, alternative family structures, art, creation, love, death are a few of the themes our narrator wrestles with as she figures out how to be a person in this world. It's an insane, life-affirming, soul-awakening, knock-out novel that I will think about forever. — Cathy Taylor

“A compulsively readable novel that follows a middle-aged artist as she undergoes a sexual and spiritual awakening. I loved this meditation on aging, restlessness, isolation, obsession, and the trials and triumphs of self-reinvention.”

The New York Times

“Hilarious, sexy, and wonderfully weird... a revelation.Publishers Weekly

A semi-famous artist announces her plan to drive cross-country, from LA to NY. Thirty minutes after leaving her husband and child at home, she spontaneously exits the freeway, checks into a nondescript motel, and immerses herself in an entirely different journey.

Miranda July’s second novel confirms the brilliance of her unique approach to fiction. With July’s wry voice, perfect comic timing, unabashed curiosity about human intimacy, and palpable delight in pushing boundaries, All Fours tells the story of one woman’s quest for a new kind of freedom. Part absurd entertainment, part tender reinvention of the sexual, romantic, and domestic life of a forty-five-year-old female artist, All Fours transcends expectation while excavating our beliefs about life lived as a woman. Once again, July hijacks the familiar and turns it into something new and thrillingly, profoundly alive.

Praise for All Fours:

“I found myself reading All Fours in solitude, because as I read I’d started making sounds that were recognizably laughter but were also expulsions of heartbreak and what I’ll call a cleansing sorrow.  If the United States had the good sense to name national treasures, I’d nominate Miranda July.” —Michael Cunningham, author of Day

"A giddy, bold, mind-blowing tour de force by one of our most important literary writers."—George Saunders, Booker-Prize winning author of Lincoln in the Bardo

"Profound and bawdy and deeply human, a brilliant work of art from a completely blown-open and fearless mind."Emma Cline, New York Times bestselling author of The Guest

"Characteristically witty, startlingly intimate. . .This tender, strange treatise on getting out from the ‘prefab structures’ of a conventional life is quintessentially July.”Kirkus

“[July] altered my ideas of what kinds of stories were possible—something Sally Rooney and I have in common. In her second novel, July brings her singular brand of sardonic melancholia and wide-eyed wisdom to bear on this tale of a semi-famous middle-aged artist who decides to take a left turn from the left turn she had already planned.”Electric Literature

“This is a gut-punch of a novel, a must-read for every woman nearing or over forty, confronting the malaise of midlife, fertility, marriage, and menopause, packaged in July’s delirious style.”—LitHub
