Staff Reviews

This author's background as a cultural anthropologist brings a vermillisitude to this tale of cultures in conflict. Her graceful prose, hint of humor, and fascinating characters keep the story electric and the reader entranced. Russell's book coalesces around a first contact mission, something that might scare off some readers, but this is not some fan-boy's science fiction novel. This is an adult, emotional roller coaster ride driven by fully etched characters who are challenged ethically and morally by a culture they can't hope to understand, or be understood by. I highly recommend this debut novel by one of my favorite writers. — Erik Barnum

Description

A visionary work that combines speculative fiction with deep philosophical inquiry, The Sparrow tells the story of a charismatic Jesuit priest and linguist, Emilio Sandoz, who leads a scientific mission entrusted with a profound task: to make first contact with intelligent extraterrestrial life. The mission begins in faith, hope, and beauty, but a series of small misunderstandings brings it to a catastrophic end.
