Jacob and his grandfather have a truly amazing relationship. Long out-grown his amazing and bizarre stories of floating girls and invisible boys, Jacob still loves his grandfather dearly. So when his grandfather starts to act strangely and dies before he can tell Jacob the secrets of his own youth during World War II, Jacob cannot comes to terms with it. Convincing his father to take him to Wales, so he can follow what few clues he has, Jacob stumbles into a magical, beautiful and dangerous world. A world that might prove his grandfather was not crazy after all! A beautiful and creative story intertwined with actual photographs that move the story to unusual levels. — Jeanette

Summer 2011 Kids' Next List

“The search for his grandfather's past leads Jake to a remote island off the coast of Wales, where a home for orphaned and 'peculiar' children once stood. Jake's grandfather's stories -- about invisible children, children who can command fire, children with enormous strength, and the monsters who hunt them -- can't possibly be true, but Jake's search of the island proves otherwise. This well-wrought story has just the right amount of suspense, scare-your-pants-off detail, and smart, compassionate children searching for a path forward in a twisted, topsy-turvy world.”
— Connie Brooks, Battenkill Books, Cambridge, NY

Description

When Jacob Portman was a boy, his grandfather regaled him with stories of his fantastic life at Miss Peregrine's home during the Second World War, even sharing photos of the remarkable children with whom he resided. As Jacob grew up, though, he decided that these photos were obvious fakes, simple forgeries designed to stir up his youthful imagination. Or were they...?
Following his grandfather's death - a scene Jacob literally couldn't believe with his own eyes - the sixteen-year-old boy embarks on a mission to disentangle fact from fiction in his grandfather's tall tales. But even his grandfather's elaborate yarns couldn't prepare Jacob for the eccentricities he will discover at Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children!
