Eating Animals is kind of a 'tough love' sort of a book. It's not a lecture and it's not a rant. It's different than most books about vegetarianism. Foer wants to put the facts out there and let you make the decision. This book is for people who know that the choices they make affect everyone around them. Foer tries very hard to get all angles of the argument. He gets letters from activists of all kinds, factory farmers, family farmers, a vegan who designs slaughter houses, a vegetarian who raises beef cattle. It's a great start for anyone interested in where the animals eat come from, and the impact your food choices make.

My only criticism of this book is this: like Micheal Pollan (who he chastises for doing just this), Foer doesn't address his own contradictions. Not once does he mention the dairy industry. He lets himself completely off the hook. I kept waiting for him to address this, but it never comes up.

Ignorance is bliss! However, ignorance also leads to conflict, misunderstandings, carelessness, and sometimes even stupidity. This book did not make me become a vegetarian, but it did make me become WAY more aware and conscientious of the type of meat I put into my body. Foer did his homework when writing this book and I am wiser for that reason. Factory farming is a frightening industry in America. Please do your homework and read up on this unsettling, yet important topic. — Misha D'Andrea

Foer has constructed a fully realized, unbiased examination of the meat industry both locally and industrially featuring interviews from dramatically varying perspectives. He refrains from being preachy while effectively exposing the horrors involved in meat production, and does so in a way that feels genuine and sincere. This noteworthy book changed my perspective on the cultural, social, and environmental implications of eating meat.

About the Author


Jonathan Safran Foer is the author of Everything Is Illuminated, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close and Eating Animals. His books have been translated into thirty-six languages. Everything Is Illuminated received a National Jewish Book Award and a Guardian First Book Award, and was made into a film by Liev Schreiber. Foer lives in Brooklyn with his wife, the novelist Nicole Krauss, and their children.
