Staff Reviews

A unique and beautifully written story about a mysterious circus that is the stage for a lifelong duel between two young magicians. Falling in love only complicates the competition where the lives of everyone in the circus hangs in the balance. You will want to be a part of Le Cirque des Rêves after reading this one! — Jess Elder

I was dragged kicking and screaming to this book, as it has everything I hate in a novel. Nevertheless I adored this marvelous (literally) tale of rival magicians who raise competing apprentices. This is a true tour de force, the author charmed me right off the bat and kept me enthralled to the very last page. I'm afraid that Erin Morganstern has exposed me as a literary snob, but I'm awfully glad she did. Highly recommended. — Erik Barnum

Fun, romantic, magical - a delightful, can’t-put-it-down read that will send your imagination whirling! — Amelia Stymacks

A beautifully descriptive novel of competing magical proteges who fall in love, their rivalry set in motion by their two masters—magicians who use their dutiful underlings as the weapons in their duel, pushing them to the limits of what their abilities can do. The young lovers, however, use their talents to create exhibit after mesmerizing exhibit as expressions of love for one another, until things finally go too far. Also enjoyable in audiobook form (ask for the Jim Dale narration). — Joe Michon-Huneau

Fall '12 Reading Group List

“The Night Circus can be described in so many ways; It's a love story, a mystery, a fairy tale. However one describes it, it is definitely an exercise in imagination of the finest type. Share the amazement! You will become consumed by this story until the very last word. This is the type of book that should be debated over cups of coffee-grown-cold, long, long into the night! Highly recommended.”

September 2011 Indie Next List

“This elegant debut is a striking example of a nostalgic yet modern fairy tale. When two competing magicians lay a wager as to which can mold the more powerful protege, they opt to use a fantastical traveling wonderland -- The Night Circus -- as the venue for the competition. What is meant to be a battle of magical skills evolves into something much deeper as apprentices Celia and Marco enchant not only the circus around them, but also each other. The real conflict arises when the two realize how the competition is meant to end and they set about trying to change their predestined fate. I adored diving into Morgenstern's mesmerizing world and mourned when I reached the end.”
