I discovered David Budbill when I read an article that he had written for the Utne Reader which discussed the value of the hermit as political activist. Budbill lives a reclusive life on "Judevine Mountain" in Vermont. I was drawn to this article because I myself had recently decided to flee city life and head for Vermont. His incredibly well-crafted, intelligent, and wry article totally convinced me that I was headed in the right direction. I read his poetry later when I heard he was coming to read at the bookstore. Budbill's wise, witty poems reverberate with the power of ancient Chinese poets, yet this ancient wisdom is turned pointedly and uniquely at human nature and modern culture. One can't help chuckling and feeling refreshed when reading his poetry.

Dave is dauntless in spite of the possibility of punishment by "Mr. Doom," the abusive superintendent. One night he leaves and is befriended by the grandfather figure, Solly, and a black heiress, Irma Lee. Ms. Levine captures the late 1920s period as background for heroic underdog characters in a fast-moving, believable, and unusual story.

Stone Quarry, the excellent new Lydia Chin/Bill Smith mystery by S.J. Rozan, brings the hardboiled Manhattan private detectives to Upstate New York. An artist who lives near Smith's vacation cabin hires him to find six stolen paintings. When he becomes involved in two more crimes, he calls on his partner. Chin and Smith are complex characters, tough and iconoclastic with an unstable relationship - the creation of a talented writer whose books feature tangy dialogue, fast-paced action, imaginative plots, and sharp descriptions. ~ Reviewed by Louise Jones
