One of my all time favorite children's books. Gidwitz's rollicking tale of 13th Century France as seen through the unlikely team of holy children and their holy dog is the perfect book for any one of any age interested in how we record the past and how we interpret it. Plus, it is a paean to the value of books to humanity and is filled with beautiful illustrations just like a medieval illuminated manuscript. The story is hilariously funny and told like the Canterbury Tales through the eyes of visitors to an inn who had heard of the children's exploits. Gidwitz manages to convey the beauty and horror of the middle ages while telling a deeply moving humanistic adventure story. ~ Reviewed by Paul Thompson
