December is my favorite month of the year at Northshire Bookstore in Saratoga Springs, NY, for several reasons:
1. Victorian Stroll Author Night
2. Our annual Star Wars Party
3. (and best of all!) Northshire’s Book Angels Program!!
Book Angels is a lovely tradition started several years ago by a consortium of publishers in conjunction with Northshire Bookstore in Manchester, VT. The idea was to bring books to local children who may not receive a book as a holiday gift. In 2013 this tradition was brought to the new Northshire in Saratoga Springs, NY, where, for the past 3 years, I have had the pleasure of organizing the program!
Book Angels is a community-wide effort, focused on sharing the joy of reading, and building home libraries. For many children in the program this may be the first book that is their very own to keep, forever!
When you come to our childrens section, you will find our Giving Tree, full of tags that have the names of local students, and on the back has the child's reading level and an interest. All of the books are hand-picked by community members - join in the fun yourself by following these steps!
How to be a Book Angel:
1. Select! a local child
2. Shop! for a book they'll love
3. Give! the joy of reading
With your help, Northshire Bookstore will deliver wrapped books to over 300 local children! It has been so fun organizing the program in Saratoga - we have some really great requests from kids! My favorites from this year include:
Trucks, Monster Trucks (from Leo, age 5)
Cupcakes (Lily, age 5)
Star Wars, Big Foot and other mysterious things (from Adrian, age 11)
Friends, Unicorns (Gabby, age 10) Books can change lives.
Knowing these kids will love and remember the books we all pick for them is what makes me love December at Northshire Bookstore!
