This is the book I have been waiting for from Follett since Pillars of the Earth came out in 1989.
This prequel stands alone and is wonderful in its rich detail and description of life in Western Europe in the 10th century. Romance, intrigue, greed and grime abound in all their glory and grisly details when a French Norman noblewoman marries an Anglo-Saxon ealdorman. This novel spans two continents and several social hierarchies. It is the attention to historical details that make Follett's work so good. Huzzah! ~ Reviewed by Maeve Noonan
