A beautifully written high fantasy world where music was once synonymous with magic until poets lost the enchantments to their arts. Now, most poets think the story of their enchantments is a myth, and the only glory they hope for is a few famous songs to perform for the higher class of Eivar. Protagonists Lin, a female poet (when there are no female poets), Darien, a poet at the top of his class, and a host of other characters we meet along the way find themselves on a journey to rediscover the lost enchantments before their world comes to ruin from a mysterious dark power that's closer to the poets than they think. ~ Reviewed by Amy Williams

A claustrophobic read, all taking place inside the secret space ship/science experiment the "Ananke" this book mixes (speculative) physics, a terrorist plot, and human interactions between crew mates and prisoners. Though the narrative switches between characters the focus of the story is on computer scientist Dr. Althea Bastet who throughout the story seems to care more about her ship than the people on it. The beginning of this novel reminds me a little bit of alien, but not nearly as creepy until the end which quickly turns more towards 2001 A Space Odyssey! ~ Reviewed by Amy Williams

Harper Lee takes us back to Maycomb Alabama in this not quite sequel of To Kill a Mockingbird. This novel, which has often been talked about as the story that spawned To Kill a Mockingbird gives us a now grown up Scout, who goes Jean Louise but has not lost any of the spunk she had as a child. The novel follows Jean Louise as she goes back to Maycomb to visit her aging father, Atticus and finds the town of Maycomb is not as she remembers it. Lee makes Jean Louise a compelling and realistic character struggling with the problems we all face growing up. ~ Reviewed by Amy Williams

In this novel, Novak takes a fairytale trope we've all heard "dragon kidnaps princess/maiden and kills/eats her" and turns it completely around, crafting a fairytale world steeped in magic and folklore. The dragon in this case is not a large scaly lizard, but a sorcerer who takes the most treasured/prettiest girl from the local villages every ten years to be his servant. Only this time he picks Agnieszka, a girl who can't keep her clothes clean for more than a minute. With the Dragon's help Agnieszka discovers a talent for magic that will change her life and at the same time put the kingdom in danger. ~ Reviewed by Amy Williams
