In this novel, Novak takes a fairytale trope we've all heard "dragon kidnaps princess/maiden and kills/eats her" and turns it completely around, crafting a fairytale world steeped in magic and folklore. The dragon in this case is not a large scaly lizard, but a sorcerer who takes the most treasured/prettiest girl from the local villages every ten years to be his servant. Only this time he picks Agnieszka, a girl who can't keep her clothes clean for more than a minute. With the Dragon's help Agnieszka discovers a talent for magic that will change her life and at the same time put the kingdom in danger. ~ Reviewed by Amy Williams

If you've read Leigh Bardugo's Six Of Crows this is the larger world of that book, and I would suggest reading the Grisha series. And if you haven't read anything by Leigh Bardugo yet, pick up this book, and start reading. This is the first book of the Grisha Series and it centers around a girl named Alina who so far has grown up as a soldier in a country at war, but at a crossing of the mysterious and dangerous "Fold" Alina soon learns that she is a Grisha, and possesses powers that are invaluable to her country. She's whisked off to the Little Palace, where all Grisha are trained, and kept under the watch of the mysterious Darkling. I enjoyed the way Bardugo mixes magic and war, and all the political machinations that take place within this book between the Darkling, the Grisha, the soldiers and their enemies. I will warn that I started out not liking Alina , but she quickly grew on me, although I feel that she has a lot more character growth to go through within the next books to really become a great character. I'm interested to see how the rest of this series plays out, and how if at all, it ties into the world of Six of Crows. ~ Reviewed by Amy Williams

The final book in the curse workers series and my only regret is that the series is over (and that I read these books all within the span of about two weeks). I was amazed to see how Holly Black tied all the pieces together by the end of the book and left me wondering what these characters would do next. I fell in love with the character of Cassel and with Lila too. While Cassel is obviously the lead of this series, and goes through the books with a fair amount of snark and cunning, Lila quickly became my favorite, and I could see why Cassel liked her so much. She is ruthless and from the beginning of the series she knows what she wants and goes for it. Not only does this make her admirable, but she also never lets her fear stop her from doing anything, and isn't afraid to speak her mind. This book has Cassel trying to pull of an even bigger con than in the last two books, but while trying to keep his friends and family out of danger, Cassel may be setting himself up for the biggest mistake of his life. It will take all the cunning, quick thinking, and conning that Cassel can muster to get him out of this mess. From the first book to the last, this has quickly become one of my favorite urban fantasy series. ~ Reviewed by Amy Williams

This is the second book in the curse workers series and everything just gets crazier from here. Black wastes no time setting up Cassel to fall deeper into the world of crimes and cons when one of his family members gets murdered. Pulling Cassel back into a world that so far he's only wished to be a part of gives black the chance to expand on the world she's created and to deepen and shift relationships between various characters. We're allowed to see even more of Cassel's past and family life as he navigates between the different worlds of his school, his family, and crime, until everything starts blending together when Lila enrolls in his school. The cons and crimes in this story are even better than the first book. The way Holly Black describes the thrill of pulling off a perfect con or a perfect job is addicting, and just like Cassel, I'm quickly becoming hooked on the cons and this series! ~ Reviewed by Amy Williams

This is the first novel I've ever read by Holly Black, and I can say right now that I have been missing out! White Cat is the perfect combination of urban fantasy, noir, and dark/gritty story. Holly Black gives us a world that is eerily similar to our own until you read that every character wears gloves, to protect themselves and each other from 'curse workers' or those born with the ability to do magic. This is where we're introduced to Cassel, a normal boy born to a family of con artists and curse workers. Cassel has no magical abilities of his own to speak of, but has learned to con like the best (or worst) of his family. However, when Cassel suddenly starts sleepwalking and dreaming of the girl he killed when he was younger, he soon needs to pull off the biggest con of his life, to fool his school, friends, and even family. I could not put this book down once I started reading, and the ending pulled me right back in for the rest of the series. ~ Reviewed by Amy Williams

A fantastic read for adults and children alike. Gaiman takes the story of the jungle book and re-imagines it into a macabre tale of murders, ghouls and supernatural happenings. Most of the story is seen through the eyes of Nobody 'Bod' Owens, our young protagonist who grows up in a graveyard filled with ghosts and their various interesting personalities. But Bod is soon to learn that growing up with the dead isn't nearly as dangerous as the world that lurks outside the graveyard gates. I couldn't put this book down after I started reading! ~ Reviewed by Amy Williams
