Full of both naivete and wisdom, these prosey fragments have a charm unparalleled. Brainard recounts seemingly everybody's childhood in paragraphs that begin "I remember . . ." An icon of the Pop Art world, Brainard was friends with the New York School of poets (check out his illustrations in John Ashbery's The Vermont Notebook). This phrase is overused, but in this case it's true: I Remember is truly a gem!
