Publisher Comments

Two thousand years ago, four children were cursed by their stepmother, separated and driven apart. For centuries they have searched for each other and now they are finally together again. With three new friends, they find refuge in the remnants of a dead city. They are the Throwaways, children who have been driven out of their colony because they looked different.

In the city they meet John Ashley, an aging warrior who has outlived his family and friends, and has lost all hope. He is at war with what's left of civilization; Jacob and his followers, who have taken over the city and begun to establish a new world. When Ashley discovers the seven abandoned children and becomes their protector, he is given a new sense of purpose, but when Jacob learns of their existence, they are no longer safe in the city. Their battles with Jacob, their escape from the city, and their subsequent search for a new home, combines myth and fairy tale in a post urban adventure. www.pjodwyer.net

Cross between a post-apocalyptic story and a fairy tale
Lee on 2010-12-29 02:51:57

The book is a quick and riveting read. A little melancholy with a glimmer of hope and a bit of the Irish thrown in. The book could have been another fifty pages longer with more character development and with more details and I would have enjoyed it that much more. Ash rather reminds me of Silas from A Graveyard Book and the book in general leaves me with the same feeling. I enjoyed this book and would suggest it to others if they appreciate the genre. I would have liked to tell Mr. O'Dwyer how much I enjoyed his work, but the web address at the end of the book is a dead end.

A great book and an Irish connection.

I read this book with my thirteen year old son. When he was a little boy we had read the Children of Lir and he thought it had a sad ending, so when I heard of this story I knew it was one for us! We both enjoyed it very much. The story line was riveting and we were "traveling" every step of the way with Ash and the children. This is a great read for all teenagers. Well done. Looking forward to book two!
