Walter M. Kroner is a Professor Emeritus of Architecture at Rensselaer and the author of many professional publications. He is an architectural consultant on religious architecture, a licensed architect, and the recipient of several architectural design awards. This book is his first venture into nonfiction writing. He lives with his wife Jean, their German Shepherd, and their two cats in Upstate New York along the banks of the Hudson River.

Walter Kroner grew up in Nazi Germany but at the age of nineteen he fulfilled a dream to come to America. With determination, and despite setbacks, he became an award winning architect and professor. In this moving, honest, and insightful memoir, he tells his astonishing story. -Louise Jones, Editor

An Insight
Heather Delafield on 2010-06-02 08:11:13

Wally's story was deeply fascinating. I have re-read several sections of the book so that I could re-experience the moments he described. One man's story is an insight to struggles against prejudice, preconception, and cruelty. Can one person's life make a difference? Yes, beyond measure.

A travelogue for today's immigrants
Richard Vosko on 2010-04-29 03:23:49

This is an unpretentious and transparent tale of a WW II German youth and his dreams. The young and clever Kroner quickly learned that being faithful to his convictions can turn hardships into golden opportunities. I think Wally could write something about how to fix our current, broken immigration laws.

Civilian view from the other side of WW-II

Interesting view of life in Germany as the world descended into war. Young Walter and his family suffer hardship but never lose their core values. Walter's early experiences in America - his perserverence towards, and unflagging understanding of his goals - were both shocking and inspiring amazing.
