You've heard the story of the boy and his dog, this is the one about the boy and his horse. Based on the actual adventure of John Messier and his Morgan horse, Tom, Bert Dodson's simple and beautiful illustrations add to the read-aloud, magical text of Willem Lange. John and Tom is the newest addition to the Family Heritage series from the Vermont Folklife Center. Set in Vermont, starring the state horse the Morgan, and with Lange from New Hampshire and Dodson from Vermont, this is a great look at Vermont life. Great for teachers, parents, grandparents, and children of all ages. Other books in the series are Daisy and the Doll by Michael Medearis and The Two Brothers by William Jaspersohn.

"Highly recommended!" (starred review)—Library Talk

Popular North Country yarnspinner Willem Lange interprets the true tale of a young logger who is saved by his remarkable Morgan horse after an accident in the woods. Luminous watercolors beautifully convey the mutual bond of love and trust between man and animal, while the warmhearted narrative calls out to armchair readers young and old. Concluding activity page. Ages 6-10.
