Majestic and awe-inspiring, redwoods are among the largest and most ancient of trees. The venerable giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum) can reach a height of 280 feet and a diameter of 23 feet; the longest-lived individual is 3,200 years old. Native to California’s western Sierra Nevada, giant sequoias hold out in scattered groves from Placer County to southern Tulare County. Although now mostly protected, they are listed by the IUCN as vulnerable because of past logging, as well as habitat loss and fire prevention policy—they need periodic wildfires to open their cones and clear the way for seedlings.

Coast redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens), the world’s tallest trees, can grow to 379 feet and live as long as 2,200 years. Thriving in rain and fog, they range from just north of the Oregon-California border to central California, with the largest populations in Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, Redwood National Park, and Humboldt Redwoods State Park. The IUCN lists them as vulnerable because of logging and conversion of habitat to agriculture and other uses.

Often associated with coast redwoods, the western rhododendron (Rhododendron macrophyllum) puts on a spectacular display in late spring and early summer with its lacework of showy pink flowers and deep green leaves.

Twenty assorted full-color 5 x 7" blank notecards (5 each of 4 styles) with envelopes in a decorative box. ISBN 978-0-7649-4502-1.
