As difficult a book as this is to recommend, this reviewer does so whole-heartedly. It is our great good fortune that a photographer of Meyerowitz' stature managed to bargain, plead, and bully his way onto the Trade Center ruins to record not only the devastation but also the back-breaking, heart-rending work of recovery, and in so doing find in the fragments of horror the "terrible beauty" revealed here. As one fire chief said to his men of Meyerowitz' presence among them day after day, night after night, "This man stays! He's here for us!"
