Northshire Bookstore Review(s)

Reviewed By... Cynthia Richards

Visiting Day is a beautiful picture book about a little girl who takes the bus with her Grandma to visit her Daddy in prison. Woodson's gentle text will comfort children with a family member in prison and illuminate this experience for those who have not had this to bear. James Ransome's warm illustrations radiate the love in Woodson's text. Jacqueline Woodson has earned numerous awards for her children's books, including the Coretta Scott King award for Miracle's Boys, a Young Adult title.

Publisher Comments

Only on visiting day is there chicken frying in the kitchen at 6 a.m. And Grandma in her Sunday dress, humming soft and low,... As the little girl and her grandmother get ready for visiting day, her father, who adores her, is getting ready, too. The community of families who take the long bus ride upstate to visit loved ones share hope and give comfort to each other. Love knows no boundaries. Here is a story of strong families who understand the meaning of unconditional love.
