Now in paperback is the outstanding Hands on the Land: A History of the Vermont Landscape by Jan Albers. Since Albers explains the choices Vermonters have made in deciding land use, this elegantly written book is much more than an environmental history, encompassing cultural, social, economic, and political issues as well. It is also visually stunning, thanks to Vermont graphic artist Leslie Morris Noyes. Each page is designed with an enormous variety of photo-graphs, paintings, graphics, maps, tables, graphs, and countless historical sidebars. The book is published by Vermont's Orton Family Foundation, established to help rural Americans shape their growth while preserving their heritage.
