Reverent film version of Cormac McCarthy's grim novel, set in Texas in the 1980s. A man stumbles upon the aftermath of a drug shootout in the desert and absconds with a suitcase full of money. He soon finds himself pursued by an ice cold killer-for-hire with an almost supernatural determination. Tommy Lee Jones plays a sheriff who is becoming increasingly uncertain that there is any point to law enforcement as he watches violence spinning out of control all around him, fueled by the infusion of drugs from across the Mexican border. Adapted by Joel and Ethan Coen (Fargo, The Man Who Never Was, Miller's Crossing), this impeccably made film paints a bleak picture of America, one that has not significant improved since the time in which the movie is set. Javier Bardem makes a chilling impact as the psychopathic hitman.
