Hitchcock's only Best Picture Oscar winner. Brought over from England to make a film about the Titanic disaster by producer David O. Selznick (Gone With the Wind, Duel In the Sun), Hitch was eventually assigned the prestigious job of transferring Daphne Du Maurier's best-selling novel to the screen. It is a fairly faithful adaptation that was particularly distinguished by Judith Anderson's bravura turn as the batty housekeeper, Mrs. Danvers. Rebecca also has an effective early performance by Joan Fontaine and very high production values, the hallmark of all of Selznick's projects.
