Absolutely delightful adaptation of Alan Menkin and Howard Ashman's smash off-Broadway hit that was, in turn, based on a low-budget Jack Nicholson film. The music is infectiously, toe-tappingly Motownesque and the recreation of Skid Row is a masterpiece of the production designer's art. Ellen Greene is affecting as Audrey, the vulnerable heroine and Steve Martin has a funny turn as a sadistic dentist. Directed by Frank Oz, who was associated with Jim Henson for many years. Menkin and Ashman went on to compose the songs for Disney's The Little Mermaid.
