Frank Sinatra, as an American colonel in World War II Italy, leads a group of escaped prisoners aboard a commandeered train towards freedom in Switzerland with the Nazis in hot pursuit. Gripping, edge-of-your-seat adventure, with Sinatra giving one of his best performances. Trevor Howard plays a by-the-book British officer who is skeptical of the motives of his superior, whom he cynically dubs "Von Ryan." Filmed on locations in Europe by William Daniels, who happened to be Greta Garbo's favorite cinematographer (for good reason). Directed by Mark Robson (Peyton Place, The Prize).
